The road to holiness
The road to holiness
Being more like Jesus requires a lot of effort and
intention, from what I’ve learnt in my journey with God, the first step to
being holy is reverence. Reverencing God means to take him in the most high
regard and to show deep respect for him. It is important that we fear God in
order to achieve all that God wants us to achieve in this life and in order to
be all that he created us to be. Fearing God is the first step to acquiring
wisdom (Proverbs 1:7), it forms a boundary and limitation from what we should
and shouldn’t do as children of God, the wisdom that comes from God stops us
from operating in a worldly standard and having a worldly mentality, instead we
operate and live in the standard that God has set for us. It should be our
intention then to reverence God, to obey his every command even when it gets
tempting and difficult, which it always does, and that is why we have to take
up our cross everyday just as Christ did.
Taking instructions seriously
It is important to take what God tells us to you do
seriously, just as how you would take a parents’ instruction seriously. What God
tells us to do or not to do is purely for our good, his ways are higher than
ours (Isaiah 55: 8-9) so he sees things in a different light from what we see,
which is why it is important to listen, trust and do as he says. For example, we
all know right from wrong as stated in the commandments yet many of us do not acknowledge
or listen to Gods’ word, instead we do the opposite and later regret making
choices that go against Gods’ word, but if we really feared and reverenced God
and his word and ensured we do right by him, we wouldn’t find ourselves in most
situations we find ourselves in.
Fellowshipping with God
When I read the story of Noah I was stuck on the first part that says Noah had a fellowship with God, this means that Noah had a friendly association with God, this shows that they had a relationship, they had a friendship and this revealed to me that a relationship is a two-way thing, love and respect should be shown on both sides, since Noah was Gods’ friend he had to show God love and respect just as God loved and respected him. As I read on, the bible shows how well Noah listened to God and took every instruction that God gave him seriously and applied it when God said he should, this proves the reverence and respect Noah had for God, and in turn we see how God was faithful to Noah and saved him and his family, so it is important for us to also establish a relationship with God and understand that it is a two-way thing, we should not only expect God to heal us, to help us get a job, get a spouse and so forth but refuse to do what he instructs us to do. We should be willing to do what will please God even if it is difficult, we have to be intentional about doing right by God just as you would want to do right by a close friend. We have to stop only asking to receive from God, we also have to give to God the way that he requires us to, this could be by obeying him, helping someone, serving, etc. but we must have a functional relationship, not a one-sided relationship.
Help from the holy spirit
In order to have a real relationship and friendship with God
we need help from the holy spirit , we cannot do it on our own, we need the
holy spirit to help us learn how to reverence and fear God, we need to holy
spirit to help us listen and actually do what God as told us to do whether it’s
in the commandments or he has instructed us to do something just as he did to
Noah, it is important that we act timely when God instructs us to do something,
if Noah had procrastinated and didn’t do what God told him to do on time, his story
would be very different, but because he listened and acted right away, he did
not miss his destiny. We should also pray for the wisdom to do as God says and
to not operate in the worldly standard, but keep our eyes fixed on God, the
holy spirit is always here to help us, we just need to ask and help will come. We
have to stick close to God and pray always because the enemy is always trying
to get us off track just as he did with Eve and convinced her to not listen to
Gods’ instruction, so we must be careful and pray for the holy spirit to help
us and strengthen us at all times.
